Where are all the heroes?

Some time ago I was asked to contribute an article to The Sentinel - an online magazine targeting English language readers in Amsterdam.

At that time The Sentinel was fairly new and had a small but loyal readership of mainly British and Irish ex-pats living in Amsterdam, who all shared an interest in English fantasy football and Dutch beer, and who were all also from time-to-time inclined to ponder some of the bigger problems that we face on our planet.

I was flattered to be asked to write something, but to be completely honest I didn't take the request seriously. Even if I was able to get motivated to write, why would anyone want to read what I'd written? I declined the offer but not wanting to offend the editorial team I asked if I might write something in the future; they agreed.

Several years after I was asked to write something, I've recently found the time and motivation for an article.

Inspired by a combination of recent events including the shocking behaviour of several overpaid sports celebrities, the summer rioting on the streets of our cities (so obviously triggered by our morally bankrupt media driven society), and the meltdown of our global financial system (which we can all now clearly see is fundamentally flawed), I've recently written an article on the subject of 'heroes', or to be more precise the apparent lack them!

I'm proud to say my article called Where are all the heroes was included as the feature article in The Sentinel Volume 4 Issue 17 published recently.
Obviously the article is dealing with some serious topics and hopefully I've managed to address them respectfully without trivialising the issues too much. At the same time I hope I've also succeeded in delivering some much needed humour!

From it's humble beginnings in 2007 The Sentinel has gone from strength to strength. I have it on good authority that the worldwide readership is now measured in the 'tens of thousands'. Well done to all you Sentinel'ers out there!

I hope you enjoy reading Where are all the heroes - please let me know what you think.

  1. Really good, I find your writing interesting and easy to relate to, amazingly proud my brother can produce a professional piece. Helen is very impressed and asks "have you considered a career change".
    Brilliant!
